Najaar 1944 verschijnt een Duitse colonne op de Ring. De bemanning neemt deel aan de strijd om de Schelde en vormt een direct gevaar voor Oud-Sabbinge: in Zeeland wordt fel gevochten, er vallen veel slachtoffers en de materiele schade is groot. Oud-wethouder Arjaan van der Vliet woont aan de Bouwensputseweg. Hij vertelt de Duitse commandant dat Wolphaartsdijk en Oud-Sabbinge de status van Rode Kruisdorp hebben en dat hij met zijn auto's en karren met paarden moet vertrekken. De colonne verlaat Oud-Sabbinge. Jan Kleinepier is getuige van het moedige optreden van de voormalige gemeentebestuurder: "Voor hetzelfde geld had de Duitse commandant zijn revolver gepakt en een eind gemaakt aan het leven van Arjaan van der Vliet". Na de invasie op de stranden van Normandie in juni 1944 zijn de geallieerde legers snel opgerukt naar het noorden en oosten. Ze hebben de haven van Antwerpen nodig om de troepen te bevoorraden. Na de zomer begint de slag om de Schelde. Geallieerde troepen vechten zich vanuit Antwerpen en Brabant via de Kreekrakdam een weg naar de Bevelanden. Ze weten de Duitsers daar en op Walcheren te isoleren. Er wordt met een enorme verbetenheid gevochten en aan beide kanten vallen duizenden doden en gewonden. De gewonden worden onder andere opgevangen in Wolphaartsdijk dat de status van Rode Kruisdorp krijgt. Gevechtstroepen mogen het dorp niet in.
